Panathinaikos Athens announced that the club parted ways with big man Kostas Antetokounmpo.
The decision of Panathinaikos to terminate Antetokounmpo’s contract had been first mentioned by coach Ergin Ataman. “We will continue without him. Our manager talked with his agent and he will certainly play for another team. I do not know if his new team is in Greece or Europe,” the Turkish coach had said before last week’s EuroLeague game against Efes.
Antetokounmpo, 27, signed a two-year contrat with Panathinaikos in summer 2023. He won both the EuroLeague and Greek League championship titles with the Greens.
This season, Antetokounmpo played just four EuroLeague games due to multiple injury problems, suffering a broken thumb in preseason and then hurting his knee.
Before Panathinaikos, Antetokounmpo spent three seasons in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers, winning the 2020 championship with the latter. In the EuroLeague he had stints with ASVEL Villeurbanne and Fenerbahce Beko.
