The departure of Mike James from AS Monaco marks the end of an era for the Principality’s program. In a revealing interview with L’Equipe, the veteran point guard confirmed that he will become a free agent this summer, despite his initial contract extension running through 2027.
When asked about reports of a long-term deal, James used a sharp musical metaphor to illustrate his point, stating, “They also say Elvis is still alive.” He followed this with a firm “No” when questioned about the possibility of returning to the Roca Team for the 2026-2027 season.
Despite swirling rumors linking him to several other EuroLeague clubs, the 35-year-old Portland native remains focused on the immediate task at hand. “I haven’t signed anywhere, nor have I spoken with anyone. I’m only thinking about finishing the season,” he asserted.
This comes during a turbulent period for the organization, which has recently navigated strike threats, legal troubles, and the resignation of head coach Vassilis Spanoulis.
His tenure in Monaco has been nothing short of historic. Since arriving in 2021, James became the EuroLeague’s all-time leading scorer and secured the Most Valuable Player award for the 2023-24 season. While he led the club to consecutive Final Four appearances, including a runner-up finish in 2025, he is still chasing an elusive continental championship.
Later today, Friday, La Roca Team faces a huge game, a Play-In Showdown clash opposite FC Barcelona in Salle Gaston Medecin. A loss would not only end Monaco’s season but would serve as James’s final EuroLeague appearance for the club.
His side receives a much-needed boost with the return to practice of Terry Tarpey and Nemanja Nedovic, who have both been sidelined indefinitely. Their availability versus Barca remains a game-time decision, but their presence in training is a refreshing sign for a roster that was recently stretched to just nine active players. However, Nikola Mirotic remains sidelined.
