Dolomiti Energia Trentino officially announced on Thursday that head coach Massimo Cancellieri will depart the club at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. The decision confirms recent rumors, with the club opting for transparency to ensure total focus on their final push for a playoff berth in Italy’s LBA UnipolSai.
The 53-year-old Italian strategist, who joined Trento following a successful stint with PAOK in Greece, informed the front office of his decision in February. Despite his impending exit, the club emphasized that his commitment has remained steadfast.
“Massimo informed us of his decision to leave in February,” stated CEO Andrea Nardelli. “This has never impacted his daily work, as evidenced by his progress, coming within a single shot of an extraordinary EuroCup semifinal appearance. The coach has met all the goals set at the start of the year, ensuring we remained competitive at a high level in both Europe and Italy. With three league games remaining, we will do everything possible to reach the playoffs, which would be a remarkable achievement.”
Cancellieri leaves a significant mark, having guided the team to the BKT EuroCup Quarterfinals. Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity.
“Aquila Basket and the city of Trento will always hold a special place in my heart,” he said. “I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished in the EuroCup and the growth of this diverse group. I will always remember that Trento was the first to trust me with a head coaching role in the EuroCup. While our paths will separate, we are determined to give the fans something to remember in this final stretch of the season.”
Currently sitting tenth in the LBA with a 10-15 record, Trento looks to finish the Cancellieri era on a high note, starting with their clash against Guerri Napoli in Alcott Arena on Saturday.
