Correcting missteps by introducing a Team World versus Team USA format in the annual NBA All-Star Game has become a popular option, especially in fans overseas and across international superstars based in the league based in North America.

Followers in Europe have been recommending an international format for many years.

After the groundbreaking success of the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off in February, the NBA is considering similar options for the midseason break, according to The Athletic.

The league and television partners discussed an original format for the 2026 All-Star Game in the Intuit Dome. The home of the Los Angeles Clippers will also host the basketball tournaments of the Olympic Games 2028 in Los Angeles, which can inspire a connected international format.

“Looking to do something new and different yet again, but excited about the possibility,” mentioned the president of league operations, Byron Spruell.

The NBA has been experimenting with several formats over recent years, including a four-team tournament with the winners of the Semifinals and Final decided by a point target, rather than traditional 12-minute quarters. An apparent lack of player focus, especially to defensive duties, prompted a search for a more suitable format. The latest adjustment remained shy of any kind of success.

Possibly setting up a clash between players from the United States and the rest of the world would certainly generate excitement, but also resurface complications in shaping respective All-Star lineups.

Beyond the next stop in Los Angeles, the 2027 All-Star Game has been officially set to take place in Phoenix.
