The King won’t condition Luka Doncic’s ultimate decision of staying with the Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers‘ season has been all about crazy shenanigans, especially following the earth-shattering trade that brought Luka Doncic away from the Dallas Mavericks.

With high hopes of a deep NBA Playoffs push by the purple-and-yellow franchise, coached by a rookie-experienced JJ Redick but with both Doncic and LeBron James on board, the expectations collapsed in the First Round.

Following the 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, it’s now the moment to think about the future – either the upcoming one and the remote one, with the two main superstars in doubtful positions.

LeBron James, who agreed to a two-year extension back in the summer of 2024 and is not expected to take a pay cut in his contract, according to The Athletic, commented on Luka Doncic’s contractual situation, expiring in 2026.

“That ain’t my job. Luka knows how I feel about him. And ultimately, that trade happened for the future. That’s not for me. Luka has to decide what he has to do with his future. He’s 26 years old, I’m 40, so he can’t be basing his career on me. That’s just real,” the King commented to ESPN.

“But I hope, obviously, he stays long term. Laker fans love him here. L.A. has accepted him. We love him as a teammate, as a brother. But ultimately, he’s got to make a decision for himself. I ain’t going to be around much longer,” LeBron James also said.
