The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to have a new onwer for the first time after more than four decades.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Buss family – the Lakers current owner – has agreed to sell the majority ownership of the franchise to Mark Walter, the CEO of multinational conglomarate holding company TWG Global.
Walter will purchase the Lakers for a valuation of approximately $10 billion. This number marks the largest sale of a sports franchise ever, passing the sum of $6.1 billion price with which Bill Chisholm purchased the Boston Celtics.
Lakers governor Jeanie Buss will retain her role. Buss is the daughter of Jerry Buss, who purchased the Lakers in 1979, and succeeded her father as president when he passed away in 2013.
Under the ownership of the Buss family, the Lakers became one of the most successfull organizations in NBA history with 11 championships since 1979.
Walter has already been involved with the Lakers since 2021 as a stakeholder.
