Retirement for 40-year-old LeBron James is close but lacks a specific date

LeBron James revisited a retirement date but fell shy of projecting a precise timeline for the end of his playing days.

“I know I’m on the other side of the hump,” the 40-year-old combo forward mentioned during an appearance on ‘360 With Speedy’ podcast, “I’m not about to play another 23 years, that’s for damn sure, and I’m not about to play another 10.”

“I’m definitely gearing up to where the end is. I’m not there yet,” added the four-time NBA champion and veteran of 22 seasons in the league.

Gearing up for his 23rd journey since being selected with the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, the 2025-26 season will be his eighth with the Los Angeles Lakers, following 11 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four with the Miami Heat.

Last season, making his way to 75 games between the Regular Season and the Playoffs presented by Google, he tallied 24.5 points, 8.0 assists, 7.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.6 blocks per contest. Certainly, far from slowing down, but the decision to call it a day is just around the corner.

“Retirement is coming,” he said, “It’s just not here just yet.”

In the interview recorded during his recent trip to China, LeBron opened up on many more topics, including the controversy in claiming to predict the 81-point game of the late Kobe Bryant in 2006 and naming an opponent from his youth league days, Derrick Tarver, as the best player he has ever guarded.
