Speaking before the NBA Cup final between San Antonio and New York, Adam Silver once more addressed the NBA Europe question, without revealing anything new.
The NBA commissioner, who had earlier talked about the possible expansion of the NBA to 32 teams, with Las Vegas and Seattle being prime candidates, hinted that with the NBA holding regular-season games in London and Berlin next month, there might be some announcements made on European soil.
“I would say we’re casting a very, very wide net right now and essentially saying to anyone interested, come see our bankers, explain to us why you’re interested, how you view the opportunity, what resources you would put behind opening a team, and then we’re taking all that information back,” Silver said.
“And then I think sometime in late January, or in January, we’ll be in a position to have more serious conversations with those interested parties.”
In the pre-game show, talking on live television, Silver repeated pretty much the same message, adding once more that “the interest has been off the charts” in Europe for the new project, adding that this interest comes from “soccer clubs, some who have basketball teams, some who don’t have basketball teams, existing basketball organizations [from EuroLeague] who potentially would be interested in joining our league. We’re talking to other organizations or individuals who don’t own any team who would be interested if we expanded to Europe, looking at opportunities.”
