The Los Angeles Lakers delivered a defensive clinic at the Toyota Center on Friday, extinguishing any hopes of a Houston Rockets comeback in the opening round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, with a commanding 98–78 victory.
After enduring five early lead changes, they seized control of Game 6 to clinch the best-of-seven series 4–2 and secure their spot in the Western Conference Semifinals. With NBA commissioner Adam Silver watching from the stands, the Lakers extended their lead to more than 20 points early in the third quarter, effectively silencing the crowd and ending the Rockets‘ 2025-26 season.
A vintage performance from LeBron James, who tallied a game-high 28 points and distributed eight assists, found a reliable scoring partner in Japanese forward Rui Hachimura, finishing the contest with 21 points. The Lakers remain shorthanded as Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic continues to recover from the left hamstring strain that has sidelined him since early April. Furthermore, German veteran Maxi Kleber was out of JJ Redick’s active rotation for this series-clinching matchup.
On the other side of the ball, defense was suffocating, holding the hosts to a dismal 35% shooting from the field and a cold 5-of-28 from beyond the arc. The Rockets’ injury-plagued roster, missing Kevin Durant due to a left ankle sprain as well as long-term absentees Steven Adams and Fred VanVleet, struggled to find an offensive rhythm. Turkish starting center Alperen Sengun battled through 38 minutes to record a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, adding two blocks to his stat line in a valiant final effort for the season, while Swiss backup center Clint Capela got two points late in the fourth quarter.
The Lakers now turn their attention to a formidable challenge in the second round. They are set to face the top-seeded and defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
