The Los Angeles Lakers have undergone a major overhaul this offseason, with the front office surrounding Luka Doncic with several new additions after moving on from a number of veteran players, including LeBron James.
Speaking to Golf Channel during The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, the Slovenian star said he likes what he has seen from the franchise’s busy summer.
“I think we have a really good team. I’m very excited to start the next season,” Doncic told Rich Lerner. “Obviously, last season didn’t end how we wanted, so we’re excited for the new season.”
While the interview primarily focused on golf, Doncic briefly addressed basketball and welcomed the changes made by the Lakers ahead of the new campaign. The six-time NBA All-Star also revealed how he developed a passion for golf.
“I just went to Top Golf once, and then I just started playing. For me, it’s very relaxing, and that’s where I started. Obviously, Austin (Reaves) and LeBron (James) were playing, so that helped me.”
Doncic admitted he finds golf even more challenging than basketball.
“This is a game where you don’t have any teammates to bail you out. Golf is way more difficult. I mean, for me, it is.”
He added that the sport has become one of his favorite offseason activities.
“It’s very addicting. Now I want to play it every day. There’s a lot of times I do 36 holes, so it’s eight hours. Patience, I think, and mental stuff… every shot matters. I think mentally being patient is the key.”
