Victor Wembanyama has officially been named the standard edition cover athlete for NBA 2K27, marking another monumental milestone in his rapidly ascending career.
After joining the prestigious ranks of legendary 2K cover stars on Wednesday, the San Antonio Spurs franchise cornerstone spoke with The Athletic’s Jason Jones about the profound personal significance of the achievement.
“It’s all happening very quick, but I am not satisfied, and I want it to happen quicker. It’s definitely a big milestone, something good. That’s done,” he said. “I know it means a lot culturally, too. It’s hard to realize for me that I’m taking more and more space, more real estate in the world of basketball, in what basketball means, in professional basketball.”
Wembanyama also addressed his recent contract extension, reflecting deeply on the future trajectory of the Spurs.
“We have a good team, we had a very good playoff run, and we had a very good regular season. But what’s even better and greater is our potential,” he mentioned. “The reality of today’s NBA is that often, the potential of teams is not fulfilled because of money. I just want to make sure it’s never our case.”
By the structure of this extension, San Antonio projects to save roughly $50M over the lifespan of the contract. This grants management critical financial flexibility to pursue roster upgrades while enabling the franchise to steer clear of restrictive luxury tax aprons for the next few seasons.
Concurrently, the broader NBA 2K27 rollout features an impressive, star-studded lineup of icons across its premium tiers. Sharing the spotlight with Wemby, Caitlin Clark graces the cover of the deluxe edition, while Derrick Rose is immortalized as the face of the ultra edition.
Before pivoting his attention fully toward the upcoming 2026–27 NBA Regular Season, Wembanyama is scheduled to suit up for France in the approaching FIBA window, aiming to solidify his country’s qualification bid for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
