The San Antonio Spurs suffered a narrow defeat against the Houston Rockets at Austin’s Moody Center on Friday, falling short in the final seconds despite a strong performance from Victor Wembanyama.
The 22-year-old French center finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in just under 32 minutes on the floor. With the game on the line, Amen Thompson rejected his final attempt to tie the match, preventing the contest from heading into overtime.
“Yes,” Wemby mentioned during his postgame press conference, calmly responding to a question about whether he would change something in the last offense.
“I would have dunked the ball,” he bluntly stated when prompted to elaborate.
The late rejection was not the only issue on his mind. He pointed out that letting the Rockets secure too many offensive rebounds was a crucial error. While he felt the squad showed improvement and played with a better face than in their opener in the 2026–27 NBA Regular Season, he stressed the need to eliminate large deficits.
“We showed a better face,” he said. “We need to stop getting down double digits. And we made some mistakes that were very costly. This is our problem.”
“We work hard for a time, and then we blow away what we have. But it was better,” continued the two-time All-Star.
Despite a frustrating 0–2 start, Wembanyama dismissed any panic regarding their record. “We will show our message on the court,” he confidently promised worried fans.
Completing a back-to-back, head coach Mitch Johnson and the Spurs are in action again on Saturday as they travel to American Airlines Center to face the Dallas Mavericks.
