The Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed to a contract with free-agent Spanish point guard Jose Calderon, his agency announced Saturday.

Calderon will sign a one-year, $2.3 million deal for the veteran’s minimum and become the team’s backup point guard behind Kyrie Irving. The decision to commit to Calderon indicates the Cavs will let Deron Williams leave in free agency. Cleveland signed Williams midway through last season to back up Irving.

A 12-year veteran, Calderon will be 36 when next season opens. He averaged 3.4 points and 2.1 assists in 41 games with the Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors last season.

He retired last summer from the Spanish national team, after being a regular member and winning the FIBA World Cup, Eurobasket and two Olympic silver medals.
