The Minnesota Timberwolves are hiring David Vanterpool as associate head coach, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The 46-year-old American is set to leave the Portland Trail Blazers after seven years as a member of the coaching team. He previously worked for CSKA Moscow from 2007 until 2012.

Vanterpool remained with the Russian team for five more years after concluding his playing career with CSKA and winning the EuroLeague in 2006. In 2012 he joined the Blazers and had a prominent part in the growth of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. His new job will bring him in a key role, especially in the defensive schemes, besides Ryan Saunders.

This summer he was previously linked with the head coaching job at the Orlando Magic and the Phoenix Suns.
