Focusing on returning to action, Borisa Simanic talked about losing his kidney. His injury marked the Serbian national team and the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

“When I got hurt, it did not seem serious. That changed after five minutes. I felt a sharp pain. I thought it was a blow to the ribs, that it would pass. I tried to continue, but I felt pain every time I moved my left leg,” he shared in an interview as the guest on the second episode of a new podcast of the Olympic Committee of Serbia, OKS.

“I went to the locker room with the doctor, expecting the usual treatment. But I wanted to use the bathroom and noticed blood,” he recalled, “I was immediately moved to the hospital. The doctor calmed me down. We did a scan. It took 20 minutes. I could not even stand up in the process.”

“I told Gaga Radanovic that I could not last until the morning,” he remembered a discussion with the national team doctor, “After a second test, urgent surgery was decided. I was relieved. Let them do whatever, put me to sleep so I don’t feel pain. Let it be what it is.”

“They operated and told me to recover. After three days of pain, a new test revealed urine leaking from the kidney. So, another surgery to prevent sepsis,” added Simanic.

Simanic, 26, hopes to repay his teammates on the senior national team of Serbia for their support. “I will do my best to recover, to be with them in the camp, to hang out, to help as much as possible,” he projected a possible reunion on the way to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
