The French National Olympic and Sports Committee recently rejected AS Monaco’s emergency appeal, the team announced on Friday. The ruling puts La Roca Team on the brink of total collapse.
By upholding the ban previously issued by the French Federation of Basketball, the CNOSF ruling keeps Monaco from competing in the third-tier NM1 division for the upcoming 2026–27 season. The FFBB originally blocked the team due to past financial issues and lingering doubts over their structural viability.
Monaco’s management expressed deep disappointment, but executives are already considering every remaining legal path to defend their rights. Still, the clock is ticking. Unless a court reverses the decision, the reigning Betclic Elite champions will remain stripped of their professional status, leaving them eligible to play only in France’s fifth-tier amateur ranks.
It is a stunning fall for an organization that has headlined modern European basketball. Founded in 1928, four years after its parent athletic club, Monaco returned to France’s top flight in 2015 and quickly became a household name across the Old Continent. Since then, they enjoyed Basketball Champions League success, captured a 7DAYS EuroCup championship, and reached the EuroLeague Final Four twice. Domestically, they conquered the league three times and lifted several other trophies.
Heading into the new season, these issues intensified beyond the domestic level. Besides being relegated to the lower tiers of France, they were demoted from the EuroLeague. Compounding the crisis, Euroleague Basketball later removed them from the BKT EuroCup field as well.
