Lonnie Walker IV is among several high-profile players and coaches currently impacted by sudden airspace closures in Dubai, as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East reach a dangerous breaking point. In a move mirrored by other athletes seeking reprieve, the 27-year-old Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv guard had traveled to the region to rest during a midseason break before the grueling final stretch of the 2025-26 continental and domestic schedules. However, shifting regional stability has left him stranded, a situation he recently addressed via a story on his Instagram account.

Reflecting on the uncertainty of the travel disruptions, Walker provided a brief update to his followers regarding his safety amidst the chaotic environment at the transit hub. “It’s been crazy, for real. I have seen it all at this point. I’m not going to get into all the details, all the stories that I have seen, or handling and dealing with, but I’m all good,” he shared. Despite the logistical nightmare and the broader security concerns affecting international travel, the veteran guard appeared to maintain a remarkably calm demeanor.

His absence comes at a critical juncture for his club. So far in the 2025-26 EuroLeague Regular Season, the Pennsylvania native has been a cornerstone for Maccabi, averaging 15.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per contest. Combined with his earlier stint at Zalgiris, Walker has now competed in 38 games within Europe’s premier competition, adding to a pedigree that includes 361 NBA appearances with the San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, and Philadelphia 76ers.

War clouds loom over Tel Aviv derby

The Tel Aviv derby between Maccabi and Hapoel IBI is now teetering on the edge of postponement as the escalating conflict with Iran paralyzes the Israeli sports calendar. While the fixture is currently scheduled for Thursday, the logistical reality of stranded players and closed airspace makes the meeting increasingly unlikely. Entering Round 30, the Yellows sit at 14-15, fighting to reach the Play-In zone, while the Reds maintain a strong fifth-place standing at 17-11.
