Countering online criticism of his highly physical defense against Victor Wembanyama, German center Isaiah Hartenstein preaches a selfless, team-first attitude

Following a frustrating Game 1 in the Western Conference Finals in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, where he played just 12 minutes due to tactical matchups, Isaiah Hartenstein responded with a dominant 10-point, 13-rebound double-double across 27 minutes to fuel the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Game 2 win at Paycom Center on Wednesday.

A central storyline was the German import’s relentless defensive coverage on French phenom Victor Wembanyama. The physical nature of his defense drew immediate scrutiny online, with some fans labeling the tactics dirty. Hartenstein addressed the narrative directly after the game, showing immense respect for his matchup while defending his style of play.

“He’s a great player. Just coming out there, being physical, making sure he doesn’t get any easy rim finishes,” he said during his postgame press conference. “You just have to make it as hard as possible.”

The physical tone was a deliberate adjustment for the center, who noted that Oklahoma City lacked the necessary force in Game 1.

“I think in the first game, they were a little bit more physical than we were. Just coming into this game, I just wanted to establish that early, and just do whatever the team needs. I’m just one of those players who brings his physicality to the game. I think that was what we needed. But in general, I think everyone just stepped up the physicality,” he mentioned.

The dramatic shift in playing time highlights the tactical flexibility of head coach Mark Daigneault. Rather than letting frustration brew over his minimized role in Game 1, the 28-year-old center credited the coaching staff’s transparent communication for keeping his mindset locked in.

“When you play a team sport, you have to really put your ego aside. And I trust Mark’s decisions a lot. He does a great job just communicating before what kind of your role is going to be. So, going into Game 1, I kind of knew what it was going to be. And then yesterday, he sat me down again, and he was kind of apologetic, but it was more like, ‘Just be ready.’ I was going to be called more, and we were going to try to do something different,” he said.

While 41-year-old Daigneault showered his starter with tactical praise for upgrading his pick-and-roll coverage alongside Chet Holmgren, the postgame media availability took a comical turn when newly crowned Most Valuable Player of the 2025-26 Regular Season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, was asked about Hartenstein’s defensive impact. “I’m not sure if it was good, to be honest… It was alright, it was good,” he stammered in a hesitant response that instantly went viral.
