Taking ownership of his late-game execution errors, Victor Wembanyama addresses critical mistakes despite scoring a game-high 29 points in Game 2 of the NBA Finals 2026

Following a series of late-game blunders, Victor Wembanyama candidly addressed the heartbreaking loss for the San Antonio Spurs against the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the NBA Finals 2026.

“I’m still very blurry, and that’s the whole problem,” the French superstar opened his postgame press conference, responding to a question about his two late missed shots and one turnover. “I need to have more poise, more control over the game. I’m not going to go through the whole possessions, but that’s the general image.”

The loss pushes San Antonio into a daunting 2–0 series deficit as this best-of-seven championship battle in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, shifts venues to New York for Monday’s Game 3.

“I would say in the last three possessions,” Wemby clarified when pressed on exactly when the game got away from him. “I think we need to put ourselves in better conditions. Digging ourselves a hole, that’s been our thing so far.”

“Of course, I liked the shot, but I feel like in this moment you need to shoot to score. In moments like this, results matter more than process,” he added. “We just need to score. I need to score. That’s the whole point.”

After erasing a 14-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter, San Antonio took its first lead in nearly two periods on Wembanyama’s three-point play with 57 seconds remaining, only for Jalen Brunson to quickly answer and tie the game. Following his missed jumper, the Spurs forced a defensive stop, but immediately squandered the opportunity when he threw the ball away. Brunson drew a foul on the ensuing play to reclaim the lead for New York, sending deflated fans in Frost Bank Center toward the exits for potentially the last time in the 2025-26 season.

“That was the most frustrating thing. To throw it away after putting in all this work,” noted Wemby. “I threw that one way. I messed up. We didn’t play great as a team. We needed to win this game. This game was ours. But at this point, it’s done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and us in the next game? Yes, absolutely.”

Despite his execution lapse in crunch time, the Le Chesnay native single-handedly powered his side’s competitive edge for most of the evening, racking up a game-high 29 points while dominating the interior. Even so, he faced severe resistance for long stretches against a physical Knicks defense, finding tough sledding in particular against Mitchell Robinson during the final seconds.

Faced with a virtual must-win scenario to rescue their championship aspirations, the Spurs head into Madison Square Garden, desperate to snap their opponent’s 13-game postseason winning streak and reclaim momentum.

“We need to never get too high, never get too low,” said 22-year-old Wembanyama, previewing Game 3. “Personally, I think I could have been better recovering from the high of the Conference Finals, but here we are. We can’t change the past. We are focused on Game 3.”
