President Donald Trump is poised to become the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, with The Athletic confirming recent rumors on Wednesday, shortly before tipoff in Game 1 between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks at Frost Bank Center.
The 45th and 47th president of the United States plans to attend Game 3 at Madison Square Garden on Monday. The visit to see his hometown team in the championship series of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, follows invitations from numerous individuals, including long-time friend, executive chairman and CEO of Madison Square Garden Sports and Sphere Entertainment Co., James Dolan. However, his plans could always change.
Trump previously indicated his intention to catch a Finals game in New York. He originally intended to catch Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, but that fixture was neutralized after the Knicks secured their first Finals berth since 1999 by sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games. While former commanders-in-chief have watched the Finals after leaving office, such as Barack Obama attending Game 2 of the NBA Finals 2015, no individual has ever attended while actively serving as the sitting president.
Security teams have already conducted formal walkthroughs to ensure the venue is fully prepared, though their presence will likely create logistical challenges for fans attending the game at MSG. Addressing the potential visit, NBA commissioner Adam Silver noted that while an official announcement has yet to be made, sports ultimately serve as a vital tool to bring people together in an increasingly divided society.
New York City mayor and diehard Knicks fan Zohran Mamdani also plans to attend Game 3, though he is not expected to sit alongside the president.
